The Health Benefits of Red Wine

We’ve all heard the old adages that red wine is good for our health. We’ve heard that it can improve our heart health, contribute to longevity, and keep you sprightly. But many of us don’t really know the science behind the studies. What is it exactly about red wine that makes it a healthy choice?

Resveratrol – One of Wine’s Natural Antioxidants

The key ingredient in red wine that is said to make it healthy is resveratrol. It is known to strengthen the blood vessels, minimize the damage caused to them, and reduce bad cholesterol.

Resveratrol is a type of antioxidant which, if taken regularly in moderation, can fight the onset of obesity, diabetes, and heart problems. This antioxidant has also been known to reduce inflammation and blood clots that lead to heart disease. Resveratrol is found in the skins of red grapes, so eating grapes or even raisins is a great way to get this antioxidant too. Red wine has more resveratrol than white wine because it is fermented with the grape skins for a longer time.

How Alcohol Helps Your Heart

There have been numerous studies conducted over the years that all alcohol, not just alcohol in red wine, is beneficial to your heart. These studies have proven that, in moderation, alcohol can:

  • Increase high density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol. This is considered good cholesterol, which your body needs to function optimally.

  • Prevents your blood from clotting in the veins.

  • Helps you avoid artery damage that can arise from low-density lipoprotein or LDL, which is bad cholesterol.
Polyphenols and Quercetin – Their Benefits

It’s been shown that red wine can even strengthen the enamel of your teeth, preventing tooth decay and other problems. The polyphenols found in red wine have been known to reduce and prevent gum disease.

The latest findings suggest that red wine may prevent cancer. There are plenty of antioxidants in red wine that suppress the oxidative damage that accelerates the aging process for maladies like diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Quercetin is another antioxidant found in red wine, similar to resveratrol that may prevent lung cancer. Moreover, resveratrol may also have the power to cause damage to cancer cells.

The latest research involves coupling resveratrol and radiation therapy to fight cancer cells in patients. With the ability to inhibit harmful cells, red wine may soon be considered necessary for perfect health.

Everything in Moderation

It’s important to take note that all the studies about health benefits associated with red wine recommend no more than a moderate intake. An excess of anything can be harmful to the body. This means one or two glasses a day, five days a week to keep your body in prime working condition.

People around the world swear by the age-defying and heart-healthy red wine. When you’re looking for the perfect drink to round off your meal and leave you feeling young again, consider a glass of red wine.
